I’ve been hunting NC’s State Game Land’s this year and just couldn’t put anything together.
State Game Lands around here, are typically heavily pressured. Seeing a whitetail could be considered a successful day, taking one is almost unheard of.

This morning, I decided to try something a different, throwing the climbing stand up along a clear cut under a set of power lines. This offered shots out beyond 300 yards.

My Kackalacky deer rifle of choice 6.8 SPC chambered AR, doesn’t have the reach for those kinds of distances, so I opted for the longer legs of a 7mm Mag. A bit of over kill for these dog sized NC deer but I figured that “little bit too much” would be mitigated by the longer ranges.

Right after first shootable light, a little 3 point whitetail tried sneaking behind me, in the wood line.
He dropped in his tracks to a 150gr AccuTip at ~3000fps MV, at a lasered distance of 32 yards.

Time to add <50 yard dope to my 7mm Mag range book, should I need to replicate the shot.
