Darren’s son turned 12 a few weeks ago so he was able to finally get his hunting license. He’s been waiting a long time to be able to go hunting with us. He’s a good kid.

Furbearer opens Sat at 12:01AM, heading out before light to see if we can’t call him in his first fox, that would be awesome. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Got out last night for some solo calling.
1st stand…action right away…a cat.
2nd stand…I saw a silhouette swoop in by my decoy….an owl. As soon as I started calling he’d drive in after it.
3rd stand…I was getting nothing with a rabbit distress so, I changed up to rodent squeaks. Two minutes in I picked up eyes coming in, a young Red looking for mouse dinner.

Out Monday night with a friend of my son. Wasn’t sure how we’d make out as PA deer season just closed Sat.

Hit a new spot we hadn’t called before. Set up toward the bottom of a cut field. Because of the crown of the field we had the call set up 50 yards in front of us. I decided that I’d call and run the lights and let him shoot. Since I wasn’t shooting, I was standing, backed up against a tree and he was sitting.

About 5 minutes in a saw eyes bouncing in from around 1:00, about 150 yards out, then I lost them as he was coming in, I motioned for Darrell to get ready. The fox popped up about 20 yards from the decoy, and circled 10 yards down wind of it. I lit it up with the kill light as soon as he popped up, he was trotting (fixed on the decoy). Because he was sitting and where the fox was on the crown of the hill he couldn’t get a clean shot.

As soon as he got down wind of us he bolted. No shot but………a close encounter.

As soon as I see those eyes light up….so do mine and my heart starts pounding………lots of fun.

I hit a few new stands on Monday night but, got busted on every one of them (doh). It was cool seeing eyes on new stands but, a humbling getting “out foxed” so many times in one night.

Changed things up a bit tonight and tagged this vixen. It’s been pretty cold here lately so she’s nice and furred up already. I normally head out around 9:00pm and call until around midnight. Tonight I was on my first stand at 4:00am and she was down by 4:05.

I think I called in a coyote Sunday night, it was around 11:00pm. But maybe I’m connecting dots that really aren’t there.

I was out for fox but, got to thinking about some of the things from the FoxPro seminar. When I’m out at night in that area, I hear dogs yipping and barking from time-to-time. It’s State Game Lands but, there a few houses here and there so, I assumed they were pets barking. But………whose dog is out at 11:00pm, 1:00am….3:00am barking ?? Most dogs are sleeping or inside at that time. That’s an assumption.

So Sunday night at like 10:30pm as I was walking in, I hear dogs again off in the distance……hmmm……I make may stand for a bit and didn’t get an bites on my rabbit distress so, I decided to change things up and see what happens. I let go with a lone female yip/howl (non-confrontational)…….nothing. I waited a few minutes and let go with a lone male challenge howl set (aggressive). About 30 seconds into that I see eyes appear from the tall grass in the bottom (center) of the field about 150 yards away and they are coming from the center of the field angling towards the woods line on the right but, also coming towards me. Absolutely looking at my call and absolutely coming in. The eyes got about 100 yards away coming up the wood’s line, and now directly below me (into the wind) and disappeared, I’m sure I got winded.

Here’s where my lack of coyote knowledge comes in and I need to be careful not to apply rational thought to animals that run on instinct……
Would a deer or even a Red Fox……both prey animals to a coyote…….come out of cover, across an open field in toward an aggressive male coyote ?? I would think that they would both stay in the cover and head the other direction, away from the coyote. What comes to a coyote challenge except for another coyote ??

I think you are right on, must have been a Coyote. I don’t think a deer would challenge a coyote and a fox is just to small. did you learn any memorable tips at the FoxPro seminar? I would have enjoyed that…

Have a good one Good Luck on the next hunt

Ya gotta be able to laugh at yourself………now that fox season is over.

So I’m in Lehigh Co. with my buddy Brian a few weeks back and notice my gun mounted light starts to flicker and dim (not made by Lucas), thought it was the battery. Later I fiddle with it and notice that if you wiggle the pigtail leading to the thumb switch, the light flickers and dims. I e-mail the vendor and he’s like “no problem, send it back”. Lat week a new one arrives, I put it on, give it a couple of clicks to test it, and head out.

I’m walking to my first set (up a sunken roadway) around 10:00pm with my scanner light on and see a few sets of eyes out I the field……there’s a couple pairs and they’re tall, I can tell they’re deer. I throw up my .17HMR to get a better look at them (bolt open). Click the thumb switch….nothing…..fiddle with it, it comes on. I turn it off and can’t get it back on……….grrrrrr. At least I have the regular tail switch in the truck.

I swear to you I am not making this up or embellishing the story one bit. As I turn to head back to the truck…I hear a red fox barking……….BACK BY MY TRUCK !!! ……..seriously ??? Can this really be happening ??

So I slowly walk back to my truck, I have my scanner on my hat but nothing on my rifle. There…not 25 feet from my truck (40 yards from me) I see the silhouette of a fox sitting. With no light I can’t see anything in the scope, I try to swing my scanner over to light him up but I can’t see my crosshairs. I reach to swing the scanner a little more and my call bangs against my seat (both hanging around my neck) and he bolts…..…

Let’s also add to this season’s list…..
Getting out of the truck and realizing that the batteries for the lights are in the charger….at home.
….the magazine is back in the truck….
….I forgot to being my boots (heading out after work)….
….three misses, two with my rifle and one with my shotgun….yep, I missed with a shotgun.
….busted so many times, I can’t even count. Yes, I have been….are you ready for it….OUTFOXED !! LOL !!
